“Wear a mask” says Dr Anthony Fauci, Directory of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases. Currently the Center for Disease Control and Prevention states masks are a “good source control - keeping you from giving COVID 19 to others.” In addition, the CDC is currently studying the benefits of masks as a protection from getting the virus from others.
If we take this information at face value then why are so many people against the idea of wearing a mask? Surely we all want to keep ourselves, our family and friends safe.
Cities across the country are beginning to mandate the use of masks as a way to slow the spread on the Coronavirus. Yet people slam the desk and call those very leaders they elected crazy, controlling and violating their rights.
Do you suppose the same individuals complaining about wearing mask, for their own safety, drive or ride in a car without a seatbelt? Do they skip helmets when they ride a bike or motorcycle? I don’t know but maybe that’s why the government steps in to protect us from ourselves.
Think of the things you do everyday to protect yourself and others. Things like wearing shoes when you mow the lawn, looking both ways before crossing the street, wearing ear plugs in loud environments or hard hats when you enter a construction zone. We know if we don’t wear shoes or shirts to a bar or restaurant we can be asked to leave or not receive any service, regardless of what Kenny Chesney sings. Most of these are not required by law but are done for our own safety. So why not masks?
I’m sure I’m like most when I say “I hate wearing a mask” but this isn’t about me it’s about those I come in contact with. Many businesses dealing with the public are requiring their employees to wear masks and some are requiring customers to wear one as well because statistics show wearing masks can slow the infectious rate. These businesses have chosen to require masks for our protection. Maybe we should think about returning the favor.
We all want to go back to whatever our new normal will be and see retailers, restaurants and bars open. Yes, we are all tired of the idea of staying home but maybe wearing masks will slow the curve and help us all get to the day there’s a vaccine to put a halt to this infectious disease.
We can keep government from mandating ordinances or passing laws that require the wearing of masks if we take it upon ourselves to show some common sense and compassion for others by “wearing a mask!”
